Can I use cast iron pans on my flat top range, or will it damage my range?

OK, I just looked it up ;)

Apparently there are heat diffusers that you can buy if it is heating unevenly. You also have to be careful not to scratch it if something gets cooked onto the outside of the pan. That happens with regular pans though too :shrug

I think that you can, but you have to be careful. I think you have to be careful not to drag the pan across to scratch it. and you also have to be careful about the weight of the pan. I know of someone who dropped their iron skillet on the stovetop and it cracked it... the whole top had to be replaced.

I googled it after I posted... and it looks like it's not recommended but people do it anyway. I saw this one site that sold heat diffusers that you can place on the stove top and then put the pan on top of that. My pans are all stainless w/a copper bottom - I replaced my Teflon coated Calphalon last year.
