View Full Version : Repotting cacti?

I have this dish garden type thing I got a couple of years ago, and it has 4 different kinds of cacti in it. There is one in there that really needs it's own pot, but I can't get it out! If I dump the pot and separate them all, will that harm them? Or are cacti pretty tough? It looks so cute sitting on my kitchen windowsill, I hate to mess it up! ;)
Also, how do you handle them without getting stabbed? I bought some rubberized gardening gloves, but the spines on one of them just pokes me right through the rubber!

from here: (http://www.highcountrygardens.com/article86.html)

Repotting cacti is always a more painful proposition. Cut a piece from a brown paper grocery sack or cotton cloth into a strip and wrap it around the center of the cactus, then gently grasp the ends and you’ll have a poke-free handle.

and there's more info about when to repot, what not to do, what to do, etc., on this site. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A1075646)

good luck! :grin
