View Full Version : Sewing Question: Taking in waist on pants?

I have a pair of jeans that fit everywhere but the waist which is too big. I have just sort of tucked the fabric and sewn it but this is a temporary solution and is really rather uncomfortable to wear for very long.

Does anyone know how I can take in the waist of these jeans? I am not exactly a beginner when it comes to sewing but I'm not an expert either, KWIM? Are there any websites that you know of that have info like this with pictures?

TIA

I would take off the waistband (staystitching if the pockets look like they might lose shape or come apart) then open it up, take it in, clip off the excess fabric and ease the pants into the reduced waistband. (this might take creative pinning before sewing).

My "Sewing for Dummies" for says that the best way to take in the waist is to

*remove the back center belt loop
*cut a v shaped slit into your wait band to remove the extra material
*double stitch the slit back together
*replace the belt loop, which will cover your handiwork

or you could do what I do with my ds and stitch wide elastic in the back and pull it tight as you go.
