Good First Project for a Sewing Machine

I just got a sewing machine and was wondering what you guys thought a good first project would be?

What about a pillow or a small purse/bag (simple)?

I can't remember my first projects (and it's only been a few years! :O), but my DD (now 8) started with a cute little pillow. She made another pillow, and then a cute little patchwork purse.

Ditto on the pillow. It's been a while, and this time I'm making curtains so the delivery men will stop getting a peep show through our beautiful cut glass window. :rolleyes (Thanks, previous owners!)
