or miliary dermatits or whatever it's called.

my cat has this we think...he's scabby around the neck alot and a bit by the base of the tail.
it feels yucky and he's a bit itchy...what should we do now?

i'd love to take him to the vet but right now we just dont' have the extra cash...but if that's what is needed we will do that.

This site has some info: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=1&cat=1332&articleid=150

It basically sounds like it could be caused by a number of things, and you can't treat it till you know what causes it, so it sounds like a vet visit might be needed. (Btw, if you really, truly can't afford veterinary care, there's a great site that can help you out: http://www.imom.org )

it could be an allergy, among many other things. have you made sure he has no fleas, i mean none. if an animal has a flea allergy even 1 flea can set them off. i would de-flea him, and maybe give him an outmeal type of bath.something to sooth the skin. if he is not feeling better i would try to bring him in. some fungus's can be contagious to humans.

The thing that I have found that works the best and is not too expensive.... Pyoben medicated shampoo for cats and dogs. It is an antimicrobial keratolytic follicular flushing agent. This shampoo is great because it continues to work even long after you bathe them. It puts a protective film on their skin also. It does contain benzoyl peroxide so it can bleach clothes and carpet but other than that I have not found any problems with it. My big tomcat, has suck problems they want to put him on kitty prozac and this has helped drastically.
