Anyone know anything about it? I really want a mechanical (non-computerized) machine. As it will be sewing slings, it needs to be able to go through multiple layers of sometimes heavy fabric.

i've got one. i love it. of course, i had a persnickity brother from walmart before, so, just about anything was an improvement.

bernina's have to be repaired by licensed bernina people, fwiw. the computerized ones cost a lot more to repair, but the 1008 i've had repaired once and it needed a pretty major part ( :blush sewing denim without proper gadgets, needles, etc.) and it was around $130 to fix it.

it's easy to clean and runs like a dream. :grin

Yes, denim/upholstery needles are cheap and will save a lot of wear on your machine if you use them consistently!
