? about Irises

My grandma just dug up 2 bags full of iris(I just LOVE these flowers), and gave them to me. She tells me that they are like weeds and will grow anywhere, in any condition.However, she has a perfect yard with all the right conditions, I on the other hand have a really tough yard that won't grow much of anything. My question is, how much light do they need, and will they tolerate a clay-like soil? TIA :-)

They didn't do well in our heavy clay soil. :shrug

But, they aren't hard to plant, so it might be worth a try.
