Is it safe to do a vegan or vegetarian diet while pregnant?

I've been vegan through 3 pregnancies except for 3 weeks of my last/twin pg when I could only eat meat without being sick--but then just as suddenly was back to being vegan. You do have to make sure you are eating a healthy vegan diet--but it's totally safe to do so :)

Yeah, I am looking for info. I have not enjoyed meat, and some animal products for a while. Now with this pregnancy, the thought of them makes me want to :sick2 I am not sure where to start to have a somewhat balanced diet though.

Have you read the sticky at the top of the message board?

Becoming Vegan and The Vegan Sourcebook both have pregnancy chapters. Your library might even have them.

I think it's Dr. Klapper who has a book as well. But, last time I checked it was out of print.

You can buy it on Amazon used. You might check your library though. It's always possible!

The most important thing is if you are not eating any animal products you need to take B12. Our environments are just too clean to get this via our diet without animal products. It's best to eat it throughout the day in small amounts instead of one big dose. Many of the little B12 dots are not Vegan and even if they are the doses are so high it's just not going to be absorbed properly. But, you can get it through many cold cereals, enrinched soy or rice milks and vegan lunchmeats. Here is a great article for you. http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/b12.htm#reliable It talks about Nutritional Yeast. I always forget about that. You can add it into stuff if you don't like the taste. But, it's great on popcorn or in salad dressing.

Feel free to ask more questions!
