Wow!!!

Did not hear that!

I'm still sad for this large Seal they just showed that got washed into dry land and people kept pouring water on him to keep him alive, but it just died. :(

I know in a disaster like this it seems silly to fret over animals....but a life is a life.

I heard the hotels are allowing refuge to pets as well, thats good!!

I know someone in the New Orleans area who runs a rescue for feral cats. I haven't heard from her yet as to how she or her animals have fared :sad2

They mentioned today that lotsa pets/animals are dying off now because of no food or clean water.
They showed quickly some dead police horses, seemed lots of them died of no water and shock and such. :sad2 And you know those horses are so incredible. So sad.
I can't take it.
When it comes to natural disaster I'm glad we own no pets, God knows I'd get my kids out then dive back in for the pets!!

That's amazing about the dolphins. How sad about the seal. :(

I'm glad they are allowing pets at the hotels. I saw in an online newspaper there was a family who stayed at their home during the hurricane (they had a five year old daughter!) and didn't evacuate because the shelters wouldn't let them bring their dogs [eta: they lived through it!], so I imagine there were others who did that, too.

Oh, wow, I hope she's okay and all those kitties. What a difficult time. :( Can you let us know how she and the animals are after you hear from her? :pray

:bheart Cristy, that is so sad. :cry

Did anybody see the miniature horses on Anderson Cooper tonight? They showed a family in Waveland, Miss., who had lost three miniature horses. They still had nine left, but they had no food whatsoever for them. The man said, "Please, if there's anybody out there from the Miniature Horse Association -- we need hay so badly," and he was clearly fighting tears.

I immediately looked up the Web site and called the association. It was 8 p.m., but someone answered the phone, to my surprise. She said she had been working late when all of a sudden, calls were POURING in! She told me that her director was loading up his truck with hay as we spoke and was going to try to find enough gas to make it down there. (He lived in Mississippi, as well, but up in Jackson.)

I don't think I could leave my pets, either .... we have three kitties and a dog, and we have two cat carriers. We really ought to get a third, because I don't think ours would stand for being shoved two in a carrier! Macy is a very complacent dog, though so we don't really need anything for her.

I anyone is interested in assisting animals that have been affected by Katrina, I posted a couple links in my pets' blog (http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=domesticzookeeper):

Noah's Wish (http://www.noahswish.org/Donations.htm) - dedicated exclusively to caring for animals in disaster situations. Will accept supplies, as well as monetary donations.

There's also...

ASPCA's Disaster Relief Fund (http://www.aspca.org/site/Donation?ACTION=SHOW_DONATION_OPTIONS&CAMPAIGN_ID=4761&s_src=disaster&s_subsrc=homepage) - helps shelters and organizations across the country that are impacted by natural disasters

Humane Society of the United States (https://secure.hsus.org/01/disaster_relief_fund_2005)? (HSUS) - relief effort to rescue animals and assist their caregivers in the disaster areas

North Shore Animal League (http://www.nsalamerica.org/) - helping to alleviate shelters in affected areas of the homeless pets that are already in their care, in order to open their facilities as a staging area for displaced or injured animals.

PETsMART Charities (https://www.kintera.org/site/c.ilK0LeMQIqG/b.494319/k.A4C8/Disaster_Relief/apps/ka/sl/singlepledgebasket.asp?c=ilK0LeMQIqG&b=494319&en=fjINIYNLIcIKK7NPJaLSJcNTItKXI6MLIjJXJ3NIJfLZKmK ) - provides emergency relief funding to assist pets in times of hurricanes, earthquakes, fire and other natural catastrophes

I bolded that blurb in Noah's Wish, because while I know I don't have a lot of money to give, a couple of friends and I can certainly round up some supplies :tu
