View Full Version : I want to learn to sew...

Where do I start?

I have used my MIL's sewing machine to sew a straight line... but I have to have her there to hold my hand, because I don't know how to work the machine, nor do I understand the lingo in the patterns.

I'd love to be able to make my own baby carriers, and I've thought about CD covers or just diapers themselves too... but right now, I just want to know basics.

I can't afford the class at the local fabric store.

I know you ladies can give me direction! :)

Read the sewing machine manual and check out some books from the library and then practice, practice, practice on scraps. I still have problems with some patterns, and I've found the Vogue sewing book helpful in deciphering the lingo and symbols. I also like craftsters.org, they give tutorials with pictures of how to sew different projects.

Good luck, and happy sewing.

Thanks Lara, that's just the sort of direction I was looking for!

That craftster website is quite cool, thanks for sharing that!
