Okay, a local public school system is dumping 1000 old iBooks for $50 a piece! They are G3 500mHz 2 USB slots, yada yada

I know I can upgrade the 64MB memory by as much as 512MB (one slot for memory expansion, max 576 MB) which could be done for $120 or less if we self-install.
I'd need to expand the 10G hard drive somehow (internally or externally) I mean, my iPod is 20G!
I'd probably want the new OS...
and upgrade the CD-Rom...
So, are all of these updates cost-effective? Am I still going to be annoyed with how slow it is, etc? How much can I expect to pay to make those upgrades?
