Okay, a local public school system is dumping 1000 old iBooks for $50 a piece! They are G3 500mHz 2 USB slots, yada yada

All the specs are here:

I know I can upgrade the 64MB memory by as much as 512MB (one slot for memory expansion, max 576 MB) which could be done for $120 or less if we self-install.

I'd need to expand the 10G hard drive somehow (internally or externally) I mean, my iPod is 20G!
I'd probably want the new OS...
and upgrade the CD-Rom...

So, are all of these updates cost-effective? Am I still going to be annoyed with how slow it is, etc? How much can I expect to pay to make those upgrades?

Well, I have a G5 and I adore it, but I'm not sure how well everything would run on a G3 :shrug I guess it at least partially depends on what you'll be using it for :)

Sounds like a lot of updating to me. I'd research the parts before buying the iBook to figure out costs. I LOVE the OSx, but it's VERY expensive. Honestly, if it were me, if the OS was not the X, I wouldn't bother, but that's just me.

We have a G4 and the new G5 - love them both.
