My boys respond great to songs--especially my older one, who will be 4 in Oct. Frequently, he sings his requests and ideas just for the fun of it, and we have musical converations! I also have a newly-turned 2yo (we're still eating the b-day cake!) who is trying to sing now too. They're hilarious when they get to howling together!

I would love to find some morning songs, bedtime songs, traveling songs, clean-up songs, tie-your-shoe or brush-your-teeth songs.... anything like that! We make stuff up a lot, of course, but I could use some material for when my brain is too tired to improvise. :P

I like Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer!! They have fun kids songs like what you describe. I learned the songs when I was little and I still find myself singing the "Peanut Butter and Jelly Song" and some song about brushing teeth during my daily activities!! Plus they do fun stuff like YODEL! Gosh, you just don't hear a good yodel any more!! And there's nothing funnier than a preschooler yodeling :giggle

In my house you just can't beat the Veggie Tales cds :grin. The are about $5 a piece and totally worth it. They have a wide variety of cds, everything from Sunday School songs to car songs to Larry's silly songs. When my ds gets fussy in the car I just pop one of them in and he usually settles down pretty quick. Plus I have fun singing along :O...the second half of the cd is split track so you can just have the music play and sing yourself.

I often wake my 6yo dd up singing:

This is the day, This is the day
That the Lord has made, that the Lord has made
We will rejoice, we will rejoice
And be glad in it, and be glad in it

This is the day that the Lord has made
We will rejoice and be glad in it

This is the day, this is the day
That the Loord haas maaade.

We sing a lot too. For wake-ups I often sing "Good mornin'. Good mooornin'. We talked the whole night through...etc" from that scene in Singin' In the Rain. Believe it or not, there's actually a song about 5 lbs of possum for dinner that was an Appalachian-type song on one of our radio stations, and I kept the tune, but changed the words for dd's bath time..."It's bathtime for dd, bath time for dd. I'm gonna; get my girl squeaky clean. Bathtime for dd, bathtime for dd. Soap and suds and water's what I mean."

There's that "This is the way..." song that works for lots of stuff, too. "This is the way we comb our hair, comb our hair, comb our hair. This is the way we comb our hair, so early in the morning."

Clean up

It's Clean up time in the playroom now for all the girls and boys
Let's stop what we are doing now and put away our toys.

Clean up! Clean up!
Everybody everywhere.
Clean up! Clean up!
Everybody do their share.

(To the tune of "I'm in the Lord's Army")
Everybody clean up a little bit
clean up a little bit
clean up a little bit
Everybody clean up a little bit
So we can _______________

Snack
Open them (hands) Shut them
Give a little clap
Open them, shut them
Lay them on your lap
Open them, shut them
Now it's time for snack

Hungry hungry
I'm so hungry
Table table
Here I come
I could eat a moose goose burger
15 pickles and purple plum

Crossing the street

Stop, look and listen
Before you cross the street
Use your eyes
Use your ears
Then use your feet.

New!! Shoe Tying Song

Tying Shoes
(Tune: Splish Splash I was taking a Bath)

Criss Cross and go under the bridge
Then you got to pull it tight.
Make a loop but keep a long tail
That is how to do it right
Then you take the other string
and you wrap it 'round the loop
Pull it through the hole
Now you got the scoop
Criss Cross and go under the bridge (this is where you tie the loops together)
Now you made a Double Knot

I find "If you're happy and you know it" lends itself to many situations. (If you're ready to go outside come put your shoes on...)
"This is the way we..." works for almost anything, also.

Oh yeah, this is our goofy getting dressed song:

Where do you put your underwear?
On your hair?
No! Not there!
Where do you put your underwear?
On dad's hair?
No! Not there...
