I usually get cut pieces, not whole chickens, but I was trying a new recipe with a whole chicken... I bought a small one from TJ's with a sell-by date of June 14th... just now I opened it and there was a moderate "funky" smell that I'm not used to smelling... is this normal? Does it indicate anything about the freshness? I thought perhaps the smell was because of the plastic it came in, but now I'm having second thoughts. :/

with a sell-by date of June 14th

Wait, June or July 14th? If it was June, I'd pitch it, unless it was very frozen for the past month :P

ooops July 14th! :blush

I'm feeling paranoid... it just smells strange to me, so I don't think we'll eat it.

Yeah, I don't think I'd do it either, but I'm extra careful about meat. I managed a Chick-fil-A for a few years, and I can tell you that food poisoning from bad chicken is NO FUN :P

I agree with Punkie, better safe than sorry. If I smell any kind of funkiness at all I figure it's not worth it!
