I have NEVER gardened. Never.

I have a black thumb and kill indoor house plants
This weekend per my request dh removed a b unch of bricks and bushes from the side of our gazebo in the back yard. Once it was up I thought to myself - wow, that looks like it should be a garden of some sort with a cute little fence around the area and things growing. LOL
But i have NO CLUE how to make that happen. I know I'd have to turn the soil and get out the rocks, right? Add some kind of fertilizer/mulch ?? can i buy stuff to add to the dirt?
What grows in the Arizona desert? Can i grow vegetables or stick to some sort of flowers?
I am totally clueless here.
