Difference between allergy and cold?

how can you tell the difference between an allergy or a col/flu? or do you? my kids have both been sick for what seems like an extraordinarily long time :/ runny nose and coughing. its been like 3 months :eek and they arent getting better. So dh asked me last night if it could be allergies to dust or something ? :shrug knowing we stuggle with allergies anyway.... :/
