I called a naturopathic doctor's today and asked if they sold children's fish oil, you know the flavored kind. Please tell me I am not losing my marbles because she told me that there is no such thing and fish oil (adult kind) is horrible for you and should not be consumed. Is this true? I am taking fish oil right now. Is there something I should be worried about? I got them from my hb midwife.

I also take fish oil supplements, and I have never heard that they are bad for you. I am answering to bump this up b/c I hope we get information about this.

I have never heard such a thing. I guess I would ask her where she got her info. That is just absurd. www.mercola.com has tons of info on fish oil.
Carlson's
Nordic Natural's
Garden of Life
all make flavored oils.
I buy Coromega www.coromega.com fish oil pudding packets for my kids. Tastes like orange dream bars.
Oils are essential in most diets. CLO has been greatly beneficial for kids that have sensory issues, autism, adhd..etc....

Another idea for you to throw around....
Did you know that flaxseed can provide the same benefits (if not more) as fish oil. There are many forms available. You can buy the oil. You can by whole flaxseed and grind it yourself. I personally, get small bags of the pre-ground stuff and keep it in my freezer.
Ways I incorporate it in my sons diet :
sprinkle it in apple sauce
sprinkle it in yogurt
sprinkle a tbs on his half-peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
~~~Anyway, back to the point of your posts. No, you are not crazy. Fish oil is fanastic! The flavored kind is called Peachy Keen and you can read about it here: http://www.sightamins.com/sdm.asp?pg=products&specific=jodnood8
This site talks about the differences between flaxseed and fish oil : http://www.barleans.com/literature/flax/21-nothing-fishy.html
bummer, just looked at the coromega pudding label and it's not Feingold approved, b/c of the vanillin. :/
Nordic Naturals makes a flavored children's fish oil capsule. My children beg for them. They're great. They can swallow them whole or chew them.
Some people think that the entire fish population is so polluted that no fish of any kind should be consumed in any form. She's probably one of 'those'
FWIW, I disagree. I have seen too many people helped by taking the oils.
My DD just started taking the Children's DHA by Nordic Naturals. It smells like bubble gum, supposed to be strawberry flavored. The ingredients say that it is "purified" arctic cod liver oil. I assume that means they do their best to take out things like mercury.
Does the flaxseed alter the color? And is their a flavor change? Our spirited dd would benefit from flaxseed greatly but she is very sensitive to taste and color change!! I bought the dye free motrin and she wouldn't touch it because it wasn't orange! She eats vanilla yogurt and has peanut butter on her toast so I could add it there if it wouldn't be noticed.
As for the original question we were given samples of the coromega fish oil and my oldest dd actually took it. She wasn't crazy about it but she said it tasted ok. I thought it had a great flavor personally. I just have picky kids. :/
You may be better off using the oil somehow. The ground seed tastes pretty earthy and nutty on it's own. Peanut butter is a great way to hide it but you can definitely see the difference. One bag at say, Trader Joes, is around $2....so itmay be worth a shot trying to figure out a way.
Edited to change color so it's easier to see. :smile
Just a fwiw. . .
On the old board when we were discussing this, cod liver oil is recommended in the winter and other fish oil in the summer, especially for those who live in sunshiney places--because of the possibility of too much vitamins A & D. (This is going from memory--just stuck with me, because I'm a huge CLO fan. Wonderful for the libido! *L*)
Yes just one a day or they have an outbreak of eczema I have given them one at night and one in the morning.
I believe that Fish oil is a whole EFA where as Flax isn't.
Random thoughts here:
- most fish is contaminated with mercury and other bad stuff. If you're going to take CLO or fish oil, take a high quality one that has been purified. The brands mentioned (Nordic Naturals, Carlson's, Garden of Life) are all good. I personally wouldn't bother with anything else. This is not the place to save a few dollars on something cheaper.
- I've read the CLO in winter/fish oil in summer arguments and have decided for *us* that CLO year-round makes more sense. The amount of Vitamin D (at least in Nordic Naturals) is not that high - 10% of the RDA. We tried fish oil last summer and it didn't work at all for Maia. Still not sure why that is - maybe different EPA to DHA ratios?
- I need to read the link that GranolaMom sent (but have to put kids to bed first ;)). What I've read in the past indicates that fish oils work better for some people because they contain EPA and DHA, whereas with Flax, the body has to convert ALA to EPA (and it seems to be questionable whether it converts to DHA at all). (I'm typing this without references handy so I reserve the right to come back and edit later, LOL). There are theories that some people's bodies don't do the conversion very well. Flax seed has a lot of benefits, but I'd recommend trying CLO as well for comparisons sake.
- Have I mentioned how much we love CLO? :mrgreen
- Allison, we have had great success with CLO in applesauce. Now that we've been taking it a while, my kids are fine with it straight but using applesauce is IMO a fantastic way to introduce it.
Our ND has dh on fish oil and said to only get high quality Norwegian fish oil because of the processing method (?) and because of the lower mercury level. I don't think this would work for kids, but he's been told to freeze his (gel caps) and take them at night so as to not have the problem with fishy burps. (tmi, I know :O).
Also, we give our ds flax oil... I mix it into a lot of things and he doesn't seem to notice it. Oatmeal (I let it cool down some first so as not to "cook" the oil), yogurt, smoothies, ketchup (he's the dipping king!).
While we're on the subject. Do those of you who give flax seed oil and/or clo to your dc really just mix it in something and they totally don't notice at all? Anyone had problems and eventually find something that worked? And could you share what it was? I've tried all the things mentioned, tried blending it w/ juice in a blender, tried mixing it in chocolate syrup (straight), tried mixing it w/ everything I can think of and I cannot get it down either of my ds. It's been rec. for my younger ds' eczema and would like to try it for my older ds for other issues.
Thanks.
