Using a Wrap

Instructions (with Pictures) for Back Carry

by Ali Cameron

A wrap-around carrier is a long piece of cloth (no rings, buckles, snaps, etc.) used for carrying babies. It can be any length, from 9 to 18 feet depending on your size and preference. I am 5'4 and 120 pounds and I can do all carries with my 15 foot Storchenwiege (www.storchenwiege.com).

Wraps can be tied in many different ways on the back, hip, or front, using one shoulder or two-shoulder carries. They are my favorite kind of baby carrier because of their versatility and most of all: comfort. Babies and toddlers can be carried in them effortlessly and they are very easy to nurse hands-free and discreetly in.

Wraps can be very affordable if you want to "make" your own. I just got 5 yards of fabric at a store for a total of $10 and got two wraps out of it! (Find out more about making your own wraps by visiting: http://www.wearyourbaby.com/Default.aspx?tabid=176)

You need a long wrap for the back carry (depending on your body size). My 15ft Storchenwiege is barely long enough for me.

Step 1) Get baby on your back using whatever method you want. Here I used the over the shoulder toss (or whatever you wanna call it).

1.5) Spread the center of the fabric up and over dc's back. Make sure the wrap is under his/her bum...I like to tuck a lil of the wrap so that it is between her and I, that way it won't slide up her back.

2) Now bring the right "strap" over your right shoulder and tighten the rails. Do the same w/the left side.

3) Now that the right side is over your shoulder and tightened, grab it and bring it to the back, under dc's leg, over their butt and over your left shoulder.

4) Spread it out so it's not bunched up. Now hold that piece between your knees.

5) Grab the other piece and bring it to the back and under dc's leg, over the butt, and over your right shoulder. (just like you did in step 3, except now your using the other side.) Spread it out over dc's bum and back.

6) Cross the tail that is over you left shoulder across your chest and tuck it into the right strap.

7) Do the same with the other tail, except vice versa.

8) Bring both tails around and tie under you dc's bum. (You could either tie it or just tuck it somewhere.)

Now you're finished. This carry is super sturdy and comfy.
