< return to A Comparison of Childbirth Philosophies for Christians by Emme Amble
BradleyThe other main "brand" of childbirth classes is known as the Bradley method, or "husband coached childbirth." This is similar to the Lamaze and Dick-Read methods, but it has a surprising basis in the observations of the way that animals give birth. Bradley believed that since animals appear to manage and cope with the pain of their births, apparently not suffering at all, humans can also learn similar coping strategies, resulting in a pain free labor. This basis does not take into account the higher level of cognitive understanding of pain and fear, and the emotionality of childbirth that is present for human beings. However, the Bradley method of prepared childbirth does have many positive traits. Normally taught in a very supportive, small group setting, it emphasizes couples treating the pregnancy as "theirs," encouraging the husband to be greatly involved throughout the pregnancy and birth. It also stresses trusting the body's natural ability for birthing a baby with minimal or no intervention. Also, maternal health and nutrition throughout the pregnancy, is greatly emphasized, as well as really knowing your breathing and relaxation techniques. The vast majority of Bradley graduates do indeed have successful, drug free, natural births.
