Education-Ese Terms

Here is a list of things that are educational without sitting at a desk, and their education-ese translation:

  • Going to the library - research instruction; silent, sustained reading; resource identification.
  • Going to the store with Mom during the day - consumer math research; health & hygiene instruction.
  • Going to the homeschool support group - socialization and interaction with peers; socializational development.
  • Going out to play - low-organized physical education.
  • Going someplace with the family that's interesting, even if it's on the weekend (wangle it in, and cut back on another day, or call it one school day if there's enough time spent) - educational field trip; resource field trip in conjunction with _____ (name of subject).
  • doing arts & crafts in relation to any subject - manipulative construction relating to ____ (name of subject)
  • doing chores along with the family - manual arts; home economics; (and this is way popular right now) time-on-task development; concentration skills.
  • learning to be good, caring people - values education.
  • learning to be brave, independent, resourceful people - quantitive, contributive sociological development.
