Childbirth Scripture

Compiled by Cyndi Egbert

All scripture is from the NKJV.

Doulas

The following treatise on doula support (birth assistant) was written by Barbara.

The main verse that I use to support the help of a doula is:
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Two are better than one; because they have a good return for their labour. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he had no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how will one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord cannot be broken.

We (all) are admonished to love the brethren and be encouragers to each other in the body:
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore, comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

John 13:15-16
"If I, then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you." (the word doula means....servant, an unpopular thought today, but that's its meaning!)

2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus the Messiah, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulations, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

I would also direct thought to 1 Corinthians 12...on spiritual gifts. I view my work as a doula as a calling. . . He has given me ability to support women in labor. I tend to view this as a gift (similar to midwives, physicians). . . that He meant to be used to help others in the body of Messiah. My ability is nothing that I ever achieved on my own, and certainly never sought.

Prenatal testing?

Ecclesiastes 11

-15- My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, [And] skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
-16- Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When [as yet there were] none of them.

Verses for Birth

For every thing there is a God-appointed time.

-1- To everything [there is] a season, A time for every purpose under heaven:
-2- A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck [what is] planted;

-24- So when her days were fulfilled for her to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb.

God has not forgotten us.

Isa 66
-7- "Before she was in labor, she gave birth; Before her pain came, She delivered a male child.
-8- Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall the earth be made to give birth in one day? Or shall a nation be born at once? For as soon as Zion was in labor, She gave birth to her children.
-9- Shall I bring to the time of birth, and not cause delivery?" says the LORD. "Shall I who cause delivery shut up the womb?" says your God.

John 16
-21- "A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.

Isaiah 46
-3- "Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, And all the remnant of the house of Israel, Who have been upheld [by Me] from birth, Who have been carried from the womb:
-4- "Even to [your] old age, I [am] He, And [even] to gray hairs I will carry [you!] I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver [you.]
